The Joiner Lab has supported and continues to support undergraduate research. Undergrads have been crucial in the success of the lab and the direction the lab has taken. Usually, undergraduates work about 10 hours a week (more is not uncommon) and start by working on an existing project. This way, volunteers can be become accustomed to all aspects of conducting research, from running subjects and collecting/analyzing data to creating a poster and writing a paper. Undergraduates are encouraged to come up with new ideas for projects which can and have led to funding opportunities. The ongoing research projects in the lab serve only as a jumping-off point for future research directions–what you bring to the table in terms of both enthusiasm and skills is just as important.
However, before you contact anyone, take a minute to think about what kind of research would excite you, both on a day-to-day basis (e.g. deriving equations, programming, analyzing data, working with people, building circuits or devices) and on a long-term basis (e.g. building robots, helping patients, figuring out how the brain works). Why should we be excited about you joining the lab?
If you think our lab may be a good fit for you, please contact the graduate student in charge of the project you are interested in working on (contact info here) as well as Dr. Joiner. Please include a copy of your CV and a cover letter explaining why you want to work in our lab and why you would be a good fit for us. Keep in mind that we require undergraduates to be able to volunteer for a minimum of 3 quarters, or one full school year.
